Subclavian steal
• 1960, Contorni describes reversal of flow
in the vertebral artery ipsilateral to a
proximal subclavian lesion in an
asymptomatic patient.
• ‘Subclavian steal’ coined in 1961 by
Reivich and coworkers.
• Left subclavian disease compensated by
flow up the right vertebral and retrograde
down the left vertebral to ultimately supply
the left subclavian distally.
