Society for Vascular Surgery Guidelines
The Society for Vascular Surgery believed that CAS was not equal to
CEA in Stroke and Death
Utilized all recent data comparing stenting with endarterectomy
September 2011 Published independent guidelines
CEA is the first line treatment for most symtomatic patients with 50-
99%
Asymptomatic patients with 60-99% stenosis.
The perioperative risk of stroke or death must be <3% in
asymptomatic patients.
Stenting should be reserved for symptomatic patients who are high
risk for CEA for anatomic or medical reasons.
Stenting should not be done in asymptomatic patients.
Low risk should receive endarterectomy
High risk should receive medical therapy
