Disease Trial (WASID)
• Published 2005, NIH funded prospective randomized study; 569
patients enrolled
Primary Goal:
to compare warfarin to aspirin for the treatment of
symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis
– Inclusion criteria: TIA or non-disabling stroke within 90 days of
randomization, 50-99% stenosis, mRS ≤3, ≥40 yrs of age
– Primary endpoint: ischemic stroke, brain hemorrhage, or death
from vascular causes other than stroke
Secondary goal:
to identify patients at highest risk of ischemic
stroke in the territory of the symptomatic stenosis, to justify their
inclusion in a subsequent trial of intracranial angioplasty and
stenting
